SHEPARD LANDFILL FIRE UPDATE
SHEPARD LANDFILL FIRE UPDATE
Our office has heard from residents across southeast Calgary who could see, smell, and taste smoke following Sunday's fire at the Shepard Landfill.
Here's what we know: Calgary Fire Department responded to the landfill around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, one of three major fires CFD attended within a three-hour window. Crews worked alongside landfill staff using specialized tactics and heavy equipment to contain it, with operations continuing into the evening. The cause remains under investigation.
We've heard your concerns about air quality and possible exposure to burning materials. Our office has submitted formal questions to Administration asking for information on air quality monitoring, public health guidance, and what can be shared with residents. We'll update you as soon as we have answers.
If you have photos, video, or information related to the fire, CFD is asking you to contact piofire@calgary.ca.
Thank you to the residents and community association representatives who flagged this. Keep the reports coming.
