E-BIKES, E-SCOOTERS, AND ELECTRIC DIRT BIKES
E-BIKES, E-SCOOTERS, AND ELECTRIC DIRT BIKES
Our office has heard from many Ward 12 residents about e-bikes, e-scooters, electric dirt bikes, and other motorized mobility devices being operated in parks, playgrounds, on pathways, sidewalks, and roadways.
The concerns are consistent: excessive speeds, unsafe riding, no helmets, and these devices being used in spaces shared with pedestrians and young children.
The technology has moved faster than the rules. Administration has confirmed there are gaps between existing City bylaws, provincial legislation, and the newer, higher-powered devices now on our pathways.
A review is now underway, looking at: How existing City bylaws apply to different device types; Provincial regulations and enforcement authority; What can actually be enforced today and where the gaps are; A public education campaign on safe riding and expectations.
In the meantime, please keep reporting concerns through 311, and contact Calgary Police Service if appropriate.
Our office will continue to monitor this work and share updates as they come. Thank you to everyone who has raised this with us.
